Baby Jewel was adorable. We played with the starfish, and then I took her inside for a snack. She ended up taking a nap right at the kitchen table! When she woke up, I took her to Walrus Waterpark. I made sure to leave a note for Cora at my cave so she’d know where to find us.

Cora could say what she wanted about being a big sister, but playing with Jewel definitely kept my mind off Owen. I chased her down the slide and pushed her in the baby swing. Later we were joined in the park by a young merboy and mergirl from nearby caves. They were obviously best friends — I could tell by the way they played and finished each other’s sentences. Seeing them, my heart ached a little. They reminded me of Owen and me.

When I looked down at my shell watch, I was shocked how much time had passed. I glanced around the water park. Cora should be back by now. I kept an eye on the entrance to the water park, but there was no sign of her.

I started to get worried, remembering the sharks. I pulled my shell phone out and called Cassie’s cave. She answered right away. “Are you guys back already? Is Cora with you?” I asked.

“Cora? No. She went to shore to play with those human boys,” Cassie said.

“I thought you went with her?” I said.

“My mom wouldn’t let me,” Cassie answered.

I tried not to sound nervous as I said goodbye and hung up. My shell phone rang almost immediately.

“Rachel. It’s Mrs. Bass,” Cora’s mother said when I picked up. “Is Cora with you? She needs to get home right away.”

I glanced around, but there was still no sign of Cora. Where was she, and what was taking her so long?
